Ever heard of Hyrox? Us, neither. But one quick scroll online shows us it’s the latest viral craze blowing up the fitness world.

First launched in 2017, Hyrox is a high-intensity, all-body indoor race that combines different workout stations paired with an 8-kilometre run. Sound extreme? That’s because it is. But equally, it’s considered an all-inclusive workout because it’s fun, it’s lively, and you don’t need to be an elite athlete to take part.

Having made waves across Europe and the US, the hype around Hyrox has now hit the Middle East, with a new slew of Hyrox gyms, training sessions, experts and events all on tap.

Here, Laura Brown, head of signature products at GymNation UAE/KSA, gives us the lowdown on the biggest fitness race in the world…

FIRSTLY, WHAT IS HYROX?

Hyrox is like if running a 10k and functional training had a baby, then raised it on protein shakes and competition! Born in 2017, it combines endurance and strength in a slick, timed format, and the best bit, it’s the ultimate fitness race for everyone.

IF IT’S NOT NEW, WHY ALL THE BUZZ NOW?

Because it’s global, addictive and accessible to everyone, regardless of their fitness level. It’s also finally hit the Middle East properly. At GymNation, we’re leading the charge with the region’s first-ever HYROX Performance Centre.

GOT IT! BUT HOW IS IT DIFFERENT TO OTHER TRAINING DISCIPLINES?

Unlike your usual class or workout of the day, Hyrox is a race – same format, same stations, same order, wherever you are in the world. You’re not just working out; you’re competing (with others or just yourself). It’s measured. It’s repeatable. And it’s designed so anyone can do it, from fitness rookies to elite beasts like our very own Jess Towl, who is the head of Hyrox at GymNation and also an Elite 15 Hyrox athlete.

SOUNDS TOUGH! WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

Hyrox works you head to toe – it builds cardio endurance, strength, power, grit, and it gives you serious bragging rights. Mentally? It’s a game-changer. It pushes you past limits you didn’t even know you had. It builds confidence, community, and that unshakable “I can do hard things” mindset.

CAN ANYONE REALLY DO IT?

It’s good for everyone – we’re not kidding. Whether you’re a runner wanting to lift or a lifter needing more cardio (or just someone who likes sweating with purpose), there’s a spot for you.

WE’RE ALMOST SIGNED UP, BUT… TALK US THROUGH A SESSION.

In layman’s terms, it’s 8km of running broken into 1km intervals, and after each 1km you hit a functional workout station – such as SkiErg, sled push, burpees, rowing or wall balls – which your legs may never forgive you for! You can do it solo, as a pair or as a relay team. There are also open and pro categories that have different weight options for the workouts. Your race, your rules.

OKAY, WE’RE READY TO TRAIN… HOW DO WE GET STARTED?

First of all, you don’t need to be a gym god. All you need is some grit, a good attitude and maybe a bit of a competitive streak. At GymNation, we’ve made it easy – Hyrox classes are part of your Signature membership, coached by experts (and sometimes Jess herself), and designed for all levels. My suggestion would be to start with our classes, get a feel for the movements, and train at our Hyrox Performance Centre or our multiple Hyrox Training Clubs all across the UAE and KSA. While other gyms might have Hyrox equipment, we’ve got the experience, the experts, the community and the vibe!

WE HEARD THERE’S A HYROX EVENT COMING TO THE UAE?

Yes! We’re in luck. The next Hyrox UAE event is coming to Abu Dhabi on July 19th, and trust us, you’ll want to be there. Our coaches are already helping members train towards it with structured programmes, class support and community sessions, as well as training to compete themselves. If you’re up for travelling, there are events globally, almost every weekend – but really, why fly when the party’s coming to us?
