Details

It took a few hits and misses before Milton Hershey founded his iconic chocolate company. Following an apprenticeship with a confectioner in 1873, Hershey opened and ran a candy shop for six years. He followed this with another apprenticeship before getting into the business of caramel. His addition of fresh milk to caramel was a success, leading to a huge profit when he sold the company. He returned to chocolate, shrugging off caramel as a fad, and that was the beginning of The Hershey Company.
