“There are hardly any loose-leaf teas in supermarkets here and barely any variations. That is what drove me to set up a tea company,” explains Laura Manning, founder and managing director of BRW Society, who moved to Dubai in 2018.

Jules Seddon, the company’s creative director, used to be an avid coffee drinker. “I was the kind of person who would have four espressos before lunch but Laura converted me,” says Jules.

The two met because their children became friends at school. Laura had already been planning to launch BRW Society and approached Jules to do some photography for her.

“I tasted the teas and was very inspired by the brand. I wanted to be part of the journey with her and show people how awesome it is, so we decided to join forces,” adds Jules.

They source their teas from all over the world, often from small farms. BRW Society’s range includes fruit, herbal, green, white and black loose-leaf teas. A lot of the fruit and herbs are from Europe, while the rooibos is from South Africa and green tea from China. Laura also spent time with professional tea blenders to learn more about the industry.

“I was in teahouses understanding how to taste tea, what to look at when selecting blends but I also think we learnt the most by mixing and matching teas in our kitchens at home,” she says.

The duo’s ultimate goal is to educate people about tea, and to make it fun and accessible to everyone.

Spinneys has launched 15 BRW Society blends, including its bestselling green tea named Candyfloss, which also contains liquorice roots, apple pieces and freeze-dried rhubarb among other ingredients. Also lookout for the organic and fruit teas such as Organic Snooze and Raspberry Mojito.

“The exposure we can get through Spinneys to reach more people would have taken us years to achieve on our own. We’ve learnt a lot through the local business incubator programme and are so grateful for the support,” says Jules.
